Background

The current wave of changes shaking the Middle East have led several experts to re-evaluate their analysis of the role of Islamism in domestic politics of the region and also to take a close look at the consequences of this development for Israel.

Hizbu’llah and Hamas are both important populist Islamist movements (Shi’a and Sunni) in the Levant region. This impacts on their relations with Israel.

In Lebanon, Hizbu’llah has become a major parliamentary force, while inside the occupied Palestinian territories, Hamas is isolated to the Gaza Strip over which it rules and dominates without parliamentary legitimacy.

This is often overlooked in the media and elsewhere. However, their persistent, harsh and at times confrontational approach to Israel does still play a role in their political aspirations and strategizing.

They are both affected by and affecting the political line of Israel. At the same time in Israel, the perception of Palestinian and Lebanese politics are to a high degree developed through the prism of Islamist politics.

Thus the seminar will address the current role of Islamist politics in the conflict by asking:

Has Islamism become the main signifier of political resistance towards Israel? How does Islamist politics affect the political positioning of the parties involved, and how is Islamist politics dealt with in Israel?
