The rise of China seems to be a defining moment of the 21st century as its demographic weight and economic prospects hold the potential to alter the centre of gravity in international politics.

So far, China has in many ways strived to become a responsible stakeholder of international society while Chinese policy makers have coined phrases such as ‘peaceful development’ and ‘harmonious society’ to reassure the outside world of China’s benign intentions as a rising great power.

Notwithstanding that China’s rapid ascent provides the world with important opportunities especially in terms of economic growth, China does at the same time pose a number of challenges. These derive from the specific strategic interests, political visions and cultural roots of a rising power that did not itself conceive the prevailing world order.

More concretely, the expansion of Chinese influence and interests have in itself caused international friction, for instance, with the Western powers concerning legitimate patterns of UN sanctions/interventions and with several Asian states regarding various territorial claims in the waters surrounding China.

In occasion of Harvard University Professor Joseph S. Nye’s visit to DIIS, this seminar seeks to address the European and American positions on the opportunities and challenges brought about by China’s rise.
