The background for the seminar is the COP17 climate meeting in Durban, South Africa, which ends one week before the seminar.

The UN officially recognized global warming as a human rights issue back in 2008. Experts increasingly emphasize the connection between climate and human rights issues, a connection that has also been discussed during the last COP meetings, though with a less than concrete result.

Thus, it is important to discuss the EU’s strategy for linking climate and human rights, and also how the EU responds to and handles violations of rights caused by climate change.

The main topic questions at the seminar will be:
– What concrete political initiatives from Brussels make it clear that the EU fights for human rights in the context of climate change?
– What does it take to ensure the rights of victims of climate change in the future?
You will have the opportunity to hear from experts:
– Tove Ryding, Global Deal Coordinator, Greenpeace International
– Kim Carstensen, former Secretary General of WWF Denmark and leader of WWF International’s Global Climate Initiative
– Stephen Humphreys, Research Director of International Council on Human Rights Policy
– Eva Maria Lassen, Research Director at the Danish Institute for Human Rights

Each speaker will be given 20 minutes to address the audience. Finally, the speakers will gather onstage for a panel discussion that will also include questions from the audience. The seminar will be open to the public and the press will be invited as well. The seminar is supported by the Board for the Advancement of Debate and Enlightenment Regarding Europe.
