The international system of development aid is rapidly changing, shaped by an increasingly multipolar world order. Traditional donor countries no longer have the financial capacity to maintain the system they established after the Second World War, leaving room for new actors such as the BRIC countries, large philanthropic foundations and religious organizations.
How will the inclusion of such new actors into the system of development aid influence ideas of development in the future? In his lecture, Morten Bøås will address these questions, outlining major development discourses and discussing how ideas are shaped and appropriated in different ways by different actors in order to promote different strategic goals.
Speaker:
Morten Bøås is Head of Research at Fafo’s Institute for Applied International Studies in Oslo, Norway. He has written extensively about global development issues, with a particular focus on Africa. Bøås has published articles in journals such as Journal of Intervention & Statebuilding, Third World Quarterly, Journal of Modern African Studies, Politique Africaine, and Global Governance.
His books include International Development, vol. I-IV (Sage, 2010), African Guerrillas: Raging against the Machine (Lynne Rienner, 2007), Global Institutions and Development: Framing the World? (Routledge, 2004), and Multilateral Institutions: A Critical Introduction (Pluto Press, 2003).
