Five months into the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)-brokered power transition plan, the end result of ‘the Arab Spring’ is by no means clear in Yemen.

Although formally transferring power after the presidential election in February, it has been pointed out from several sides, that Ali Abdullah Saleh continues to hold considerable influence in Yemen, due to the control by his relatives of most of the country’s security agencies.

The transitional government faces considerable tribal and religious factional unrest, a severe looming food crisis, and a deteriorating human rights situation.

Two months after the formal swearing in of the new president, former Vice President al Hadi, protesters continue to point out that the terms of the transition plan (including the immunity of the former president) was not what they had called for.

Speaker:

Tawakkol Karman, journalist, human rights activist and 2011 Nobel Peace Prize winner. Founder and Chairwoman of the Yemeni organization Women Journalists Without Chains, a co-founder of the Yemeni Human Rights Network and a leading figure in the call to end the Ali Abdullah Saleh-regime during the 2011 protests.
