Background

The Atlantic Alliance has a new strategic concept that will guide it into the 21st century. It was adopted at the Lisbon Summit in November 2010, promising a renewed Alliance – a ‘NATO Version 3.0’ ready for new challenges, new partnerships and renewed relevance and impact.

The new Strategic Concept and its promises and challenges are analyzed in two new DIIS Reports, one edited by Jens Ringsmose and Sten Rynning, entitled NATO’s New Strategic Concept: A Comprehensive Assessment, and the other authored by Trine Flockhart, entitled After the Strategic Concept – Towards a NATO Version 3.0.

Together, the two publications represent the hitherto most comprehensive analysis of the new Strategic Concept and its implications for NATO’s future and for security in the 21st century.

At the seminar the two reports will be presented along with analyses of how far ahead NATO is in implementation of the decisions taken in Lisbon and the challenges faced by NATO such as in its new mission in Libya.
