This seminar with a focus on South Africa is the last one out of five weekend courses held between 2010 and 2012, organized by The International People’s College in cooperation with Helsingør Folkeuniversitet. The BRICS countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – are five countries with growing economic and political influence in the world.

South Africa has a strategic position in Africa as one of the continent’s most important political and economic players with global influence and aspirations in a number of areas.

The country has experienced major changes since its transition to democracy in 1994. Democratic principles are founded in the constitution and modern legislation, and the truth and reconciliation process is an example to follow.

Civil society’s influence is growing, and South Africa is actively mediating in conflicts on the African continent and increasing its involvement in the African Union, but emerging economies like China, Brazil and India are also seen as future strategic partners.

South Africa still faces great challenges. Lifting the poorer parts of the population out of poverty, unemployment, inequality and social problems has proven extremely difficult.
