Brazil is a large and diversified country. For almost a decade the Workers’ Party has governed Brazil.

In 2011 Dilma Rousseff, the first woman to become President in Brazil, also a member of the Worker’s Party, took over after President Lula da Silva. She continues to focus on tight financial control combined with a social profile and social welfare programmes.

President Lula was supported by broad sectors of the Brazilían society. There has been a notable economic growth and millions have been lifted out of extreme poverty.

Nevertheless, it takes a long time to level out the differences between the rich and the poor, and wide differences remain.

Conflicts between the wealthy in the big cities and the impoverished groups living in slum areas, between landowners and farmworkers without access to land, and between indigenous people and settlers in the Amazonas shows development takes time.

Although Brazil has everything within its frontiers, and is an increasingly important country in Latin America and a BRICS country, it also wants to become one of the major players in the global arena (BRICS står for Brasilien, Rusland, Indien, Kina (China) og Sydafrika).
