Stigma represents a common persistent and prominent feature that affects social and political interactions in all societies. Stigma research has been productive over the past forty years allowing us to better understand the nature, sources and consequences of stigma.
In a plethora of studies, the concept is variably defined and approached. There is a need to develop new lines of research.
This workshop presents a prime opportunity to open our theoretical horizons. It should be of particular value for PhD candidates and other scholars working on issues related to stigma. The workshop should also be seen as holding an interest for the invited researchers and their respective institutions to participate in an international virtual scholarly community interested in these issues.
The workshop develops and discusses the theories and approaches of studying stigma in developing countries with the aim of covering a wide range of social science issues, among others citizenship, HIV/AIDS, slavery, resources access and control.
Common to all these themes are how researchers can produce worthy, original and insightful work where there is perhaps already an abundance of existing literature.
Overall the workshop’s primary concern is to take a critical look at established theoretical and methodological approaches to studies of stigma and to provide inspiring input for ISG participants, especially PhD candidates working on related issues.
These objectives will be achieved through discussions regarding uses of concepts, theory application, ethical dilemmas and methodological styles.
