Southern Africa envisages launching a 7,3 billion US dollar (44,5 mia. DKR) giant power project before 2008, an official said in Port Louis on Thursday, according to the World Bank press review Friday.

Joao Caholo, supervisor of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), said that South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo will join hands in launching the project with a capacity of 35.000 megawatts in the Congo River.

The project is also involved with a 4.000 km long power transmission grid, which will transfer power from the DRC to Botswana, Namibia and South Africa upon completion.

– These countries will establish a hydro power company which will be listed on the stock market, he said, adding that southern African countries will also open the market to international investors and welcome loans and investment from the World Bank and other international financial institutions.

Meanwhile, the SADC is undertaking studies with a view to developing a renewable energy program of southern Africa, he said.
