A joint IMF-World Bank mission due in Zambia at the end of January is set to endorse a 3,8 billion US dollar (20,9 miliarder DKR) debt write-off that the institutions boards will probably approve by April, a World Bank official said Thursday.
Ohene Nyanin, the World Banks country manager for Zambia, said the mission would conduct a final assessment and advise the boards of the institutions that Zambia had met conditions for debt relief under the highly indebted poor countries (HIPC) initiative, a global drive to cancel debts of some poor nations.
Nyanin said Zambia could step up its fight against AIDS and build schools, hospitals and roads if a multi-billion dollar debt to international lenders is scrapped.
