The World Bank and International Monetary Fund are likely to cancel Malawis external debt of about 2,9 billion US dollar (16,8 milliarder DKR) by September, a World Bank official said on Monday.
Khwima Nthara, the World Banks Economist for Malawi, said that in his opinion the country had met all the requirements for debt cancellation under the Heavily Indebted Poor Country (HIPC) Initiative backed by the two institutions.
Malawi is the poorest country in Southern Africa.
