Carlos Cardoso – Telling the Truth in Mozambique
Paul Fauvet and Marcelo Mosse

“This is a fitting tribute to a character who brought that mixture of passion, commitment, caring, curiosity, impatience with authority and disdain for orthodoxy which makes for great journalism and accounts for the deep mark Carlos made across the sub-continent.”
Anton Harber: founder, Mail & Guardian

On 22 November 2000 Carlos Cardoso, arguably the finest of post-independence Mozambican journalists, was assassinated in Maputo while investigating the theft of 14 million US dollars from the country’s largest bank. His death sent shock waves through Mozambican society. Who was this man? Why did powerful interests want to silence him? In this compelling biography, two former colleagues tell the story of this remarkable journalist and Mozambican.

“This book is a tribute on a scale appropriate to Carlos Cardoso. It is a precious document, which succeeds in combining the story of a man with the history of the times in which he lived. The book is a window for understanding the complexities of the last 30 years of a nation that made an original attempt to find its place in the world. Fauvet and Mosse bring back to life the man who was one of the most creative of those who imagined this new Mozambique.”
Mia Couto

“Carlos Cardoso has this particular quality – when we look at him we see everything clear and transparent. Few of us have this quality, this purity. He is a man of causes. So he is man who can see further ahead than the rest of us. And when we go into battle, in a formation that has its hierarchies and positions, since Cardoso is carrying the standard, he is more easily targeted.”
José Luis Cabaco.
