THE UN and the Government of Namibia Thursday signed an agreement under which the world body will pump more than 1 billion Namibian dollar into Namibias fight against HIV and poverty.
The 168,96 million US dollar (1,047 milliarder DKR -1,046 billion Namib. dollar at the prevailing exchange rate) will come through the Namibia-United Nations Country Programme Action Plans over the next five years.
The signing followed after the two parties worked out a UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) in September last year.
Director General of the National Planning Commission Helmut Angula said at the signing that the County Programme Action Plans were integrated frameworks that contained detailed areas of co-operation between Namibian-based UN agencies and the Government.
The money will complement Namibias efforts to fight poverty and disease.
UN Resident Co-ordinator Simon Nhongo said the signing gave the UN agencies and affected ministries the go-ahead to implement activities covered by the annual work plans.
He said although the County Programme Action Plans covered the activities of UN Childrens Fund (UNICEF), UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP), it represented the joint participation of the entire UN Country Team.
Nhongo said it was done to make UN operations “leaner, more efficient, more effective and more responsive” to Namibia’s needs.
– In the course of this process, transaction costs will be reduced on the part of both the Government and the UN, he said.
