The International Rehabilitation Centre for Torture Victims, IRCT, has obtained a new member centre from Rwanda.
Uyisenga N’Manzi is the only organisation in Rwanda exclusively dedicated to treating child victims of torture related to the genocide that took place in the country in 1994.
Uyisenga N’Manzi’s mission is to respond and contribute to assist genocide orphans and child headed households by responding to their psycho social and economic development needs.
The organisation, which started to operate in 2002, provides a comprehensive range of free of charge services to child torture survivors and their families.
These include medical, psychological, social, economic, justice, as well as support groups.
During the 1994 Rwandan genocide, 800,000 – 1,000,000 of Rwanda’s Tutsis and moderate Hutus were murdered.
The survivors of the genocide, especially orphans, have been deeply traumatised by their painful past.
