Fiskene svømmer atter frit i havet langs den senegalesiske kyst. Landets næsten nyvalgte præsident har nemlig indført et totalt stop for udenlandsk fiskeri. Det betyder, at de lokale fiskere igen fanger flere og større fisk, hvilket kommer befolkningen til gode.
Præsidenten har planer om at udbrede ideen om bæredygtigt fiskeri til hele Vestafrika, skriver Green Africa Directory.
DAKAR, January 28, 2012: As one of his first acts after his election in 2012 Senegal’s President Macky Sall rescinded (ophæve) foreign fishing permits in his nation’s Exclusive Economic Zone. Within months of his action thousands of local fishermen were seeing their catches dramatically increased and their families and communities restored.
President Sall is now moving forward with plans to assure a sustainable domestic fishery free of foreign exploitation, creating a resource management model for West Africa and the world.

“Since the beginning of his leadership of Senegal, President Macky Sall has made strong and courageous decisions that go in the direction of preserving the nation’s fisheries. This award is a recognition of his political commitment,“ said Michael Obrien Onyeka, Executive Director of Greenpeace Africa.
Greenpeace, which proposed President Macky Sall to the selection committee, wishes to see him continue to promote marine reserves and good governance in fishery resources management at the regional level.

President Macky Sall has received the ‘Excellence in National Stewardship of the Ocean‘ award in the annual Peter Benchley Ocean Awards.
The Benchley awards program is dedicated to recognizing excellence in ocean conservation solutions across a wide range of categories including science, policy, media, youth and citizen activism.
The awards celebrate exceptional efforts leading to the protection of our ocean, coasts and the communities that depend on them. This year’s winners were selected from among dozens of highly qualified candidates whose names were submitted to the selection committee.
The ’Excellence in National Stewardship of the Ocean’ award is given annually to the representative of a nation whose policies contribute to the protection and restoration of the oceans for the benefit of the communities that depend on that for their food and livelihoods.
