KAMPALA, 21 October 2008: UN Children Agency UNICEF estimates that up to 3.000 Ugandan children and women are still being held in captivity by the Lords Resistance Army (LRA).
The LRA rebels operate in forests of north eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. They are accused of having raped and mutilated civilians, forcibly enlisted child soldiers and of massacring thousands of Ugandans during what has been one of Africa’s longest-running conflicts.
According to the Humanitarian Situation Report for the July-October 2008 period by the UN children’s agency UNICEF released on Monday, coverage of child protection systems stands at 60 per cent of sub-counties in the Acholi and 48 per cent in the Lango sub-regions.
Over 90 per cent of children in the northern Uganda are considered conflict-affected, having directly experienced massive population displacement and violence during the conflict.
