KAMPALA; 16 April: Ugandas maternal mortality (mødredødelighed) rate has reduced from 505 to 435 deaths every 100.000 live births, according to preliminary results of the 2006 Uganda Demographic Health Survey.

The survey, the third to be conducted by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (Ubos) since 1995, involved 9.864 households countrywide. According to findings of the survey, in 1995, maternal mortality rate was at 527 deaths per 100.000 live births.

In 2001, it dropped to 505 and is now at 435 deaths. Presenting the UDHS 2006 preliminary results at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel on April 13, Helen Nviiri, an official from Ubos said most maternal deaths occur outside the hospitals because most people shun hospitals.
