I et forsøg på at spare penge og blive mere effektiv har FNs udviklingsprogram UNDP slået de to regionale kontorer i Dakar og Johannesburg sammen på en ny adresse i “Afrikas hovedstad” Addis Ababa.
ADDIS ABABA, 28 May 2013 (UNDP): The UNDP Regional Service Centre for Africa was inaugurated Tuesday in Addis Ababa by the United Nations Development Programme Administrator Helen Clark, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia Hailemariam Desalegn and UNDP Assistant Secretary-General and Regional Director for the Regional Bureau of Africa, Mr. Tegegnework Gettu.
“Addis Ababa has become Africa’s capital, the hub for global and regional discussion about Africa’s development,” said Helen Clark. She added that “UNDP needs to be at the epicenter of regional development discussions and policy making at the highest level” and this regional service centre “is a central pillar of UNDP’s work as a world class, knowledge-based organization.”
The Regional Service Centre supports the work and partnerships of the 46 country offices supervised by UNDP Regional Bureau of Africa and “offers strategic policy and programme advice based on UNDP’s expertise and experience,” said Helen Clark.
The centre is the result of a merger of the two centres in Dakar and Johannesburg, a decision taken by UNDP Senior Management based on practical and technical considerations to improve UNDP’s cost-effectiveness, efficiency and support to countries in Africa, enhancing both the impact and efficiency of its work.
As an integral part of the merged centre, several policy advisors will remain in Dakar given that their support is concentrated on a number of countries in the sub-region and as such their proximity is more cost-effective.
Together with the other UNDP regional centres based in Bangkok, Bratislava, Cairo and Panamá, these new premises contribute to an innovative network of knowledge and expertise that supports “partnership with all who share UNDP’s commitment to poverty eradication and sustainable development,” said Helen Clark.
