UNICEF tager kampen op mod børnesoldater i DR Congo

CAMEROON, 6 January 2009: The United Nations Children’s Fund has warned against the rise in the recruitent of child soldiers as the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo escalates. The UN agency said the escalation of the conflict has led to human rights violations.

According to UNICEF some children as young as nine are being recruited by all armed groups – the government and rebel forces alike. The UNICEF Representative in the DRC, Pierrette Vu Thi, is quoted as saying the UN agency is very concerned about the situation.

UNICEF reported rampant sexual violence and exploitation are taking place with impunity in villages and sites for internally displaced people. It said women and girls of all ages are raped in the fields and in their homes.
