New global mortality risk index – Bangladesh is in the “extreme” category in terms of the average number of citizens at risk of natural disasters, according to UNISDR
DUBAI, 16 June 2009 (IRIN): Four big but also densely populated countries – Bangladesh, China, India and Indonesia – are deemed to be in the “extreme” category in terms of the average number of citizens at risk of tropical cyclones, earthquakes, floods and landslides.
This is one of the conclusions in a new “Mortality Risk Index” launched Tuesday by the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR).
Colombia, Burma and Pakistan come next, falling into the “major” category, while Afghanistan, Algeria,DR Congo, Guatemala, Iran, Japan, Peru, Philippines, Romania and Uzbekistan are rated “very high”.
The index helps to identify multi/combined, relative and absolute risk by country, covering the four most common “sudden onset hazards” above.
