The Times of India reports that it is a win-win situation for the Marxists in West Bengal, according to the World Bank press review Tuesday.

They are now on the best of terms with the World Bank, but more importantly, the state needs money and the Bank needs a market to invest. Both have realized they need each other and have therefore buried all inhibitions.

After assistance for district hospitals and polytechnic education and loans for states technology universities, chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is looking for fresh loans from the World Bank to revamp primary healthcare. And that too, without any conditions, “overt or covert”, as the chief minister puts it.

Bhattacharjee called on the Banks country head Michael Carter in Delhi during his last visit to the capital to attend his partys politburo meeting.

– The country head is a good person and we had a frank discussion on the project. Things have reached the final stage, said Bhattacharjee about his meeting with Carter.
