Kampene i Syrien går hårdt udover en usædvanlig rig kulturarv, og UNESCO erklærer nu seks af landets kulturelle mindesmærker på Verdensarvslisten for stærkt truede, herunder den historiske bydel i Damaskus.
PHNOM PENH, 20 June 2013 (UNESCO): The World Heritage Committee has decided to place the six World Heritage sites in Syria on the List of World Heritage in Danger so as to draw attention to the risks they are facing because of the situation in the country.
The danger listing is intended to mobilize all possible support for the safeguarding of these properties which are recognized by the international community as being of outstanding universal value for humanity as a whole.
The sites concerned are: the Ancient City of Damascus: Site of Palmyra; Ancient City of Bosra; Ancient City of Aleppo; (korsridderborgen) Crac des Chevaliers and Qal’at Salah El-Din; Ancient Villages of Northern Syria.
The decision was taken as part of the World Heritage Committee’s review of the state of conservation of World Heritage sites already inscribed on the World Heritage List.
The World Heritage Committee is currently holding its 37th session in Phnom Penh, the Cambodian capital. The session will close in Angkor on 27 June.
