Competition from China’s ambitious export drive is widely regarded as closing off opportunities for entry-level industries in Africa. But is this actually the case?

Drawing on research published in her new book, “The Dragon’s Gift: The Real Story of China in Africa”, Professor Deborah Brautigam, a long-time observer of China in Africa, discusses China’s engagement in African manufacturing.

How is Chinese competition actually affecting African manufacturing? Where are Chinese firms investing, what support are they getting from the Chinese government? What about the use of Chinese labor? How is this likely to affect Africa’s industrial development?

Speaker
Deborah Brautigam, Professor, American University
