Background

Almost a decade has followed since the issue of migration and development surged the international development agenda and gained substantial attention among both policy makers and academics.

Urged mainly by the shear amount of remittances sent home by migrants to their home countries, the World Bank as well as other donors grew an interest in the migration and development nexus.

They attempted to either ‘make migration work for the poor’ or to manage migration better through combined policies that included aid policies or both.

In developing countries governments also directed new attention towards the role of ‘their’ diasporas abroad, often wooing them rather than fearing their influence.

Throughout the past decade the nexus has been described as unsettled, later as a hype or a panacea for development, and various international forums and conferences has discussed the issue, but has this link between migration and development become more comprehended?

The aim of this DIIS seminar is to stimulate a discussion among policy makers, practitioners and academia by addressing a range of questions such as: How has the shifting ‘background policy developments’ such as intensified globalisation, economic crisis, changed international security situation, power interests and national policy environments (renationalising endeavours to ensure a so-called ‘coherency’) changed the nature of the nexus?

And what would be possible avenues for future policy making in the migration-development field?
