Docs & Talks: Brazil / Your Turn (København)
How has the previous years’ social and political turmoil in Brazil been perceived by the younger generation?
The Brazilian documentary ‘Your Turn’, which won two awards at the Berlinale last year (the Amnesty International Film Award and the Peace Film Prize), tells a story, through multiple voices, of what happened during those years right up to Jair Bolsonaro’s takeover of power in 2018.
Fast-paced and illustrated by raw archival footage, the film shows activist Marcela, student movement leader Nayara and rapper Luca, looking back at how it all started in 2013 with school occupations, street demonstrations and the rise of political awareness among young people – also in relation to gender and racism. Through the eyes of our three protagonists, we get a close look at the growing polarization of the society, the political alienation and the increasing brutalization of the conflict – while the ghost of the past dictatorship haunts in the background.
DIIS Researchers Marie Kolling, who works with urban poverty and inequality in Brazil, and Frida Sofie Gregersen, whose research focuses on urban violence and security, will together with Georg Walter Wink, Associate Professor and Head of the Centre of Latin American Studies at the University of Copenhagen, talk about the economic and political crisis that formed the background for the student revolt. They will zero in on the fall of the Labor Party in 2016, the current structural changes, notably in the field of housing and education, and, finally, the situation for the younger generation today after more than a year with the extreme right at the helm of South America’s largest democracy.
