Docs & Talks: Palestine / Samouni Road (København)

Gaza is one of these hopeless and deadlocked conflicts that can make you want to look the other away, as yet another bombing campaign and series of confrontations hit the news stream.

But behind the bomb smoke people are living, for whom every single military action casts long shadows on their lives. The film ‘Samouni Road’ follows the Samouni family in the time before a wedding in the rural outskirts of Gaza City. The father and several other members of the family have been killed during an Israeli attack that has marked the family both mentally and physically.

This is especially true for the children who do not filter experiences in the same way as adults but openly explore the extreme conditions. From their perspective we relive the deadly incident, reconstructed in a beautiful yet disturbing animation, and get to understand how it keeps on affecting their lives.

‘Samouni Road’ won the award for Best Documentary in Cannes in 2018 and is screened for the first time in Denmark.

After the screening, Senior Researcher at DIIS Lars Erslev Andersen and community worker and youth projects leader Bahaa Eleyan, who have lived and worked with young people in Gaza for many years and grew up near ‘Samouni Road’, will discuss what it’s like to be young in one of the world’s most densely populated areas where over 65 percent of the population is under the age of 24 and the prospects for the future are scarce.
