DIIS-seminar: What next for Europe and China? (København)

2020 promises to be pivotal year for relations between Europe and China with a flurry of high-level political summits already planned. This comes after last March the European Union dubbed China, its second largest trading partner, a ‘strategic competitor’ and ‘systematic rival’. Last year was also filled with debates across the continent, including most recently in Denmark over the Faroe Islands, on the potential risks of partnering with Huawei, China’s leading telecommunications provider, on 5th generation mobile networks. At an end of the year summit marking the 70th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, for the first time in its history, NATO recognized the challenge of China’s growing military capabilities, with Chinese innovation in artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies presenting Europe with new opportunities and challenges.

At the start of a new decade, from trade and technology, to diplomacy and defense, this seminar will explore how Europe’s relations with China are potentially undergoing significant changes.
