Webinar: Building resilient and peaceful communities in the Central Sahel

Building resilient and peaceful communities in the Central Sahel – an example of the operationalisation of the Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus

Online event following the Ministerial Roundtable on the Central Sahel 2020

People are facing an unprecedented crisis in the Central Sahel region, requiring an urgent response to provide a future for the Central Sahel

The humanitarian situation in the Sahel region has continued to deteriorate over the past decade, worsening people’s living conditions. The escalation of armed violence is causing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in the Sahel. Insecurity and increasing displacement (1.6 million displaced and refugees in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, 55% of whom are children) are seriously disrupting already fragile basic social services. Governments are trying to respond to this unprecedented and complex crisis, but their limited experience and resources remain a challenge. The conflict in the Sahel is fueled and intensified by the impacts of climate change and about 20% of the population suffers from chronic food insecurity and acute malnutrition is widespread.

There is a vital need to address the crisis through a holistic and multi-sectoral response linking humanitarian, development, and peace interventions, through increased funding and stronger and complementary partnerships. The proposed event brings together representatives from the Danish State and Sahel, donors, national and international NGOs and the voices of the people of the Sahel affected by the current crisis to highlight its impact on their living conditions and more generally on the region, presenting best practices and concrete recommendations.

This online event is co-hosted by Save the Children, CARE, Danish Refugee Council, Bilital Maroobé Network (RBM), AREN (Niger), KARKARA (Niger), CRUS (Burkina Faso) and TASSAGHT (Mali) and follows the Ministerial Roundtable held on 20th October 2020, organised by the governments of Denmark and Germany, the European Union and the United Nations, as well as side events on the Central Sahel.
