Webinar: Between peace and conflict – Eritrean refugees in Ethiopia
Last month, a military conflict between the Ethiopian government in Addis Ababa and the northern Tigray Region broke out. The situation has lead to fear of destabilization across the region. But what does the fighting mean to the many Eritrean refugees currently seeking shelter in the Tigray Region?
Following the 2018 peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea more than 60,000 Eritrean refugees arrived in Ethiopia. Thousands continue to arrive every month. They live under harsh conditions that call for humanitarian action. What will the renewed hostilities mean to refugee protection in the region and how will it shape refugee movements in and out of Ethiopia?
In this webinar, Dr. Tekalign Ayalew Mengiste, Assistant Professor in Social Anthropology at Addis Ababa University, discusses his recent co-authored DIIS Policy Brief on Eritrean refugees in Ethiopia. He is joined by Associate Professor Fekadu Adugna Tufa, Addis Ababa University, and Programme Delegate Hans Storgaard from the Danish Red Cross in Addis Ababa.
