Conference invitation: Addressing the Rule of Law and Welfare in the Sustainable Development Goals

November entitled ‘Addressing the Rule of Law and Welfare in the Sustainable Development Goals’. The conference will gather researchers and practitioners for discussions on the promises and challenges in the realisation of the SDGs and centres around SDG 16 in the achievement of other welfare-related SDGs such as healthcare, access to work and reduction of inequality and poverty.

CONFERENCE PROGRAMME

Day 1

Keynote session: “Achieving the SDGs in development policies: Building strong and fair institutions”

  • Christian Friis Bach, Adjunct Professor, Department of Law, University of Southern Denmark, and former Danish Minister for Development Cooperation: The SDGs, a rights-based approach and state-building
  • Lars Engberg-Pedersen, Head of Research Unit and Senior Researcher, Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS): Do the SDGs work? Global norms and development
  • Trine Pertou Mach Director of Policy, Advocacy and Media, Oxfam IBIS: It’s all about interconnectedness. SDG10 and the fight against inequality
  • Arvinn Gadgil, Director, UNDP Oslo Governance Centre: Connecting the dots to see the big picture: How Governance Institutions Matter for Reducing Poverty, Inequality and Injustice

The keynote session is chaired by Marianne Sandvad Ulriksen, Associate Professor of Political Science and Project leader of JUST SOCIETY, Department of Political Science, University of Southern Denmark.

Workshop I: Rule of law and Democracy: Manipulation, Misuse and Corruption

Workshop II: Equal access to Justice: Vulnerable groups and barriers to welfare & justice

Day 1 is rounded off with a reception, serving tapas and drinks.

Day 2

Keynote session: “Human rights-based approaches to development: Promises and Challenges”

  • Louise Holck, Executive Director, The Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR): A rights-based approach to the SDGs: Experiences from the Danish Institute for Human Rights (tentative title)
  • Klavs Kinnerup Hede, Director of International Relations, The Danish Parliamentary Ombudsman: The Danish Parliamentary Ombudsman’s international work and SDG 16
  • Lola García-Alix, Senior Advisor, Global Governance, The International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA): Walking the talk of securing Indigenous Peoples’ rights to advance the implementation of the SDGs

The keynote session is chaired by Frederik Waage, Professor of Constitutional Law, Department of Law, University of Southern Denmark.

Workshop III: Social innovation, networks and inclusion

Workshop IV: The role of International Law & Human Rights in the achievement of the SDGs
