Thursday Talk: Alexandra McFadden on Race and Energy Politics of the Far-Right in Australia
As the world continues on an upward trajectory of climate catastrophe, at the same time we have seen the rise of far-right movements across Western capitalist countries, as the power that they wield over politics and society grows. What is the relationship between the racial politics of these far-right groups and the environment? When looking closely at the rise of racism and fossil fuels in the building of colonial empires, it becomes harder to separate the two.
The book by the Zetkin Collective ‘White Skin, Black Fuel’ explores this trend historically and contemporarily across Europe, The United States and Brazil. In her talk, Alexandra will shift focus towards Australia and the far-right there, and how it has built up an ideology of race and energy politics.
Alexandra is a Master’s student in Human Ecology at Lund University and part of the Zetkin Collective, conducting research on the connections between the far-right globally and the climate emergency. You can read more here: https://thezetkincollective.org/the-conference/
