Job: Political Senior Advisor at the Danish Family Planning Association (Sex & Samfund) (Maternity Cover)

As we have recently sent of a colleague off on maternity leave, the Danish Family Planning Association’s (DFPA) Political Unit is seeking an experienced Senior Advisor to join our team. Your role will be to support our mission in ensuring people’s right to autonomy over their own bodies. As a Senior Advisor, you will play a leading role in implementing DFPA’s global multilateral initiatives and building global and regional alliances across a wide range of partners, including member states, UN organizations, and civil society actors.

We are facing a divided geopolitical landscape as well as a US presidential election that will have critical implications for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) globally. At the same time, Denmark has new opportunities to amplify its voice as a global advocate for women and girls in international forums such as the UN Security Council and through the upcoming Danish EU Presidency. Therefore, we are seeking a Senior Advisor who can address these opportunities and challenges—someone who understands how to interpret and navigate geopolitical nuances, dynamics, and power relations, and who excels in working with diverse and culturally varied audiences and partners.

We are looking for a passionate and visionary political specialist with at least five years of experience in political advocacy, lobbying, and policy work at the international level. The right person for this role will closely monitor global geopolitical trends, have a deep passion for politics, and is dedicated to securing and advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) worldwide.

We are looking for someone with concrete experience with global UN processes related to sexual and reproductive rights, gender equality and human rights, such as CSW, CPD, HLPF, and the UN Security Council, and who possess insight into relevant policy areas such as development, gender equality, health and education. You must have knowledge of the ICPD and Beijing agendas and experience working cross-regionally with a wide range of diverse stakeholders with different backgrounds and starting points. You must be a persuasive advocate for SRHR – we work in a fast-paced and changing environment, which requires an agile and adaptable Senior Advisor who can navigate a complex geopolitical landscape and strategically position DFPA with key decision-makers both at home and on the global stage.

Key responsibilities of this position include:

  • Policy and advocacy work, including the development of thematic messages and strategic input for UN negotiation documents, policy analyses, and more.
  • Advocacy towards member states across regions to build political support for the SRHR agenda within the UN framework.
  • Representation of DFPA in global forums, at external meetings, and with decision-makers and partners, including ministries, UN/EU missions, parliamentarians, UN organizations, and other allies.
  • Lead coordinator for collaboration with DFPA’s international federation, IPPF’s UN office.
  • Collaboration and coordination with external colleagues across Danish and international civil society networks, particularly regarding SRHR, the Security Council, and the 2030 Agenda.
  • Fulfillment of deliverables and reporting related to DFPA’s Strategic Partnership Agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Monitoring and communicating geopolitical trends, policy analyses, and global opposition.

We are looking for a colleague who:

  • Has at least 5 years of experience in political advisory roles, such as within a ministry, embassy, or advocacy organization.
  • Holds a degree in social sciences, international affairs or another relevant field.
  • Is a team player with the ability to work independently, quickly, and in a structured manner.
  • Can contribute to a positive, stimulating environment and foster strong cross-functional collaboration within the organization and in external collaborative networks
  • Is experienced in working with a diverse range of partners, target groups, or member states.
  • Possesses a strong and relevant network and is adept at expanding it when necessary.
  • Is proficient in English as a working language; proficiency in Danish at a similar level is an advantage.
  • Is willing to work irregular hours with partners in different time zones and to travel for global meetings and processes.
  • Have ability to live and work in Denmark (DFPA are not able to assist with working visa/housing)

Moreover, it will be considered a distinct advantage if you have experience with the UN Security Council and/or the EU and are thematically familiar with SRHR, gender equality, human rights, and the climate crisis in a development and/or humanitarian context.

You will be joining an organization that is actively engaged in political work both nationally and internationally, with numerous ongoing projects and collaborations across domestic and international borders. You will become part of the political unit, where tasks are handled both independently and in teams, balancing long-term projects with urgent, time-sensitive issues that require swift action.

We offer:

An exciting, challenging, and developmental full-time position with significant responsibility in a dynamic and recognized organization, where you will work towards a world where everyone has the right to control their own body and sexuality. A world that does not accept discrimination, persecution, sexually transmitted infections, or unwanted pregnancies destroying lives, both in Denmark and internationally. Additionally, you will enjoy a busy, often enjoyable, and varied daily work life with approximately 50 talented colleagues in Amager.

The position is a maternity cover for a minimum of 8 months, with the possibility of extension. However, portfolio adjustments should be expected if the contract is extended beyond the maternity cover.

Application:

Final Deadline for submission of applications is October 25, 2024. However, Applications will be reviewed as they are received, and interviews will be scheduled on a continuous basis. Early application is strongly recommended, as the position may close once a suitable candidate is found.
