GENEVA, 20 December 2013 (IRIN): The crisis in the Central African Republic (CAR) risks deteriorating even further amid escalating Muslim-Christian clashes and the reported involvement of foreign elements, a top United Nations official warned Friday, calling for international efforts to help avert disaster.
Since President Francois Bozizé was ousted in a coup in March, CAR has descended into chaos.
With the collapse of law and order, and the spread of deadly violence between disbanded rebels (opløste rebelgrupper) and self-defence groups, people have fled their homes. For the first time in the country’s history, large-scale atrocities (grusomheder) are being committed along Muslim-Christian lines.
This In Depth features video testimony from those caught up in the violence in the northern town of Bossangoa, where tens of thousands of people are holed up in the grounds of a Catholic mission and other locations. It also contains reportage and analysis articles.
The In Depth will be updated as IRIN’s coverage of the crisis continues.
