Brazil has asked the World Trade Organization (WTO) for the right to impose up to 4 billion US dollar (ca. 20 milliarder DKR) in annual sanctions against American goods and services to penalize the US for handing out illegal cotton subsidies, officials said Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Japanese trade minister Toshihiro Nikai on Tuesday told the head of the WTO that his country remains committed to making efforts with other countries to strike a deal for the Doha Round of free trade talks at an early date, despite a major failure last month, ministry officials said.
