USAID’s Resilience and Economic Growth in Arid Lands – Increasing Resilience activity is addressing hunger and poverty in pastoral communities. The activity is empowering communities to take control of their own development. This is according to the USAID website.

Members of the community are coming together to discuss development challenges, identify solutions and develop action plans through the Participatory Learning, Planning Action process.

The activity gathers a lot of data from household surveys in the community. A mobile data collection system is simplifying collection and analysis. The technology, called “ViewWorld” (www.viewworld.net) is a straightforward application that requires minimal training and support.

Although submission of data requires access to a mobile network, data collection can occur without network coverage. Data can be saved and submitted later when coverage returns.

Staff are able to interview more than 100 household respondents per day. The mobile application made it possible for the team to analyse data within two to three days after collection. The faster pace of data analysis permits the team to make fast, evidence-based decisions.

As a result, Resilience and Economic Growth in Arid Lands –Increasing Resilience is changing more lives faster.

Mary Munene, the activity’s Monitoring and Evaluation Officer is involved in the process of documenting Participatory Learning, Planning Action reports.

“Mobile technology makes data collection easy by saving my time overseeing data entry tasks,” she explains.

The activity will scale up the use of mobile technology in data collection as the process rolls out across the vast, remote areas of Garissa, Isiolo, Marsabit, Turkana and Wajir Counties.
