København fik sit S-tog i 1934, nu får Tanzanias største by også sine to første linjer – og det er der god brug for i en by, hvis indbyggertal nærmest vokser time for time på grund af flugten fra land til by i den store østafrikanske nation.
The first-ever commuter train service in Tanzania’s commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, has been launched to ease congestion on roads, BBC online writes Monday.
The trains will run on two routes, mostly during peak hour. Private commuter minibuses, known as “daladalas”, are the main mode of transport in Dar es Salaam, one of the world’s fastest-growing cities with a population of app. four million.
It is the first phase of a government scheme to improve the transport network in the big port city on the coast of the Indian Ocean.
One track covers a 25 km journey between Dar es Salaam’s Mwakanga and Tazara railway stations and the second track runs for 20 km between Ubungo-Maziwa and City railway stations.
Trains will operate during the morning and evening – not in the afternoon and late at night.
A one-way ticket costs 400 Tanzanian shillings (ca. 1,50 DKR), which compares favourably to daladala fares which range between 500 shillings and 1.000 shillings – depending on the journey, BBC notes.
Note: S-banen i København har i 2012 en længde på ca. 170 km dobbeltspor med 84 stationer undervejs.
