FNs departement for økonomiske og sociale forhold (Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA)) efterlyser et anderledes syn på fattigdom.

Budskabet er: mere fokus på reel fremgang og vækst fremfor statistik og korrekt styring (Good Governance).
I forbindelse med lanceringen af en rapport om verdens sociale situation 15. februar 2010 pegede DESA på, at der er forskel på, hvordan forskellige organisationer bedømmer fattigdom udfra statistikker.
Samtidig blev der rejst spørgsmålstegn ved, i hvilken grad korrekt styring (Good Governance) skal stå i vejen for regulære resultater.

Coinciding with the release of the Report on the World Social Situation 2010 on 15 February, one of DESA’s key officials at the UN discussed how the global development community should begin rethinking poverty.
Dr. Jomo Kwame Sundaram, the Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Development at DESA, highlighted the varying statistical poverty indicators.
He warned against losing focus on eradicating poverty in favor of focusing on statistics.
He said that highlighting the most effective methods for poverty reduction are critical, rather than spending all the time on finding a golden mean.
KRAV OM KORREKT STYRING HINDRER UDVIKLING
Jomo claimed that a heavy focus on good governance does little to help development.
Instead, good governance is the dependent variable, improving as economic development improves.
– I don’t think anybody disagrees that good governance is desirable, said Jomo.
But he added:
– By over-prioritizing good governance, developing countries are bound to fail.
