UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed the former leader of Botswana and the immediate outgoing president of the UN General Assembly to be the UNs new special envoys on climate change.

Festus Mogae, who was president of Botswana from 1998 until earlier this year, has extensive experience in economics and development planning, having also served as his Southern African countrys finance minister and in the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd Friday committed 100 million australian dollar a year to help establish in Australia an international institute to accelerate development of industrial-scale carbon capture and storage demonstration projects.

The technology, yet to be proven on a commercial scale, would capture carbon dioxide emissions and sequester them underground, in Australias case by injecting it into maturing undersea oil and gas wells.
