Ideas and concepts are a main driving force in human progress, and they are arguably the most important contribution of the United Nations.
Ten years of research by the independent UN Intellectual History Project (UNIHP) shows why international organizations also live or die by the quality of the people who work in them and by the quality of the ideas and policy proposals that come from them
The UNIHP, started in 1999, has been tracing the origins and the evolution of key ideas about international economic and social development, with some inroads into peace and security, nurtured under UN auspices.
The motivations behind these ideas as well as their relevance, influence, and impact have been assessed against the backdrop of the socio-economic and political situations of individual countries, the global economy, and major international developments.
It is the first project to have compiled the intellectual history of the world organization’s contributions to setting past, present, or future development agendas. It has produced 17 volumes and a cd-rom with complete oral histories of 79 individuals.
This public seminar will address the lessons for strengthening the UN to better respond to the challenges of the 21st century, addressed in the 2009 UNIHP capstone volume, UN Ideas That Changed the World.
