This seminar will discuss past, present and future approaches to studies of the migration-security nexus.
Since researchers began to look critically at the policy linkages between migration and security almost two decades ago, transnationalist approaches to the study of migration have become increasingly popular.
However, as Riina Isotalo argues, research in transnationalism has been politicized and used in support of neo-liberal agendas.
According to Isotalo, migration researchers have neglected the study of the security-migration nexus. This has been left to security studies specialists who lack the analytical tools for engaging with the migrants’ perspective.
