FILIP DE BOECK is Professor of Anthropology and Program Director of the Africa Research Center at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. He has conducted extensive field work in the DR Congo since 1987.

Presenters:

FILIP DE BOECK is Professor of Anthropology and Program Director of the Africa Research Center at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. He has conducted extensive field work in the DR Congo since 1987.

His academic interests include postcolonial identity in Africa, processes of accumulation and expenditure in informal economies, history, memory, death, and popular urban culture, especially with regard to children and youth.

His recent publications include Kinshasa: Tales of the Invisible City, a joint book project with photographer Marie-Françoise Plissart, published in 2006.

SIMON TURNER is Senior Researcher at the Danish Institute for Internatio-nal Studies. He has worked on the conflict in Burundi, doing ethnographic fieldwork among refugees and the diaspora in East Africa and Europe.

He has published on masculinity, diaspora and conflict, sovereignty and public authority, and refugee relief work. His recent publications include the book Politics of Innocence: Hutu Identity, Conflict and Camp Life, published in 2010.
