Seminar: A New Chapter in Cross-Strait Relations? Lessons from the Taiwan Presidential Elections (København)
Having just won another term as president with a record number of votes, and secured her party (the DPP) a majority in the parliament, Tsai Ing-wen seems to have strengthened her mandate as leader of Taiwan.
While most observers, less than a year ago, expected the opposition KMT candidate to win the elections comfortably, Tsai managed to reinvigorate her campaign by adopting a strong position on the unfolding Hong Kong crisis, thereby placing Cross-Strait relations at the center of the election agenda.
But where does that leave relations between Taiwan and China, what are the main lessons to draw from the election results, how strong is Tsai’s governing mandate on closer inspection and how do Cross-Strait relations fit into the broader picture of US-China great power rivalry in East Asia?
In this lunch talk, these and other questions will be addressed by Arthur S. Ding, emeritus Professor from the National Chengchi University in Taipei. Co-hosted by ThinkChina, the talk will take place at the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies and be moderated by Andreas B. Forsby from NIAS.
The presentation will be followed by 30 minutes of Q & A.
Please note that any recording of the lecture before prior approval from NIAS/ThinkChina is not allowed.
