More than half of the world’s population now live in cities, and urban centers will absorb almost all population growth in the coming decades.

As a consequence of the growing size and density combined with stronger inequality, cities have become sites of intensified insecurity and violence. This development has caught the attention of academics and policy-makers alike and will only grow in the coming years.

In the city, a multitude of actors makes claims to the policing of urban violence. With this seminar, we discuss what role the state police play in urban policing across the global North and the global South.

With participation from Danish and international scholars, this seminar focuses on how police forces in Denmark, the Philippines, the Netherlands and Mozambique respond to and are implicated in urban violence in, for instance, the contexts of the war on drugs and the policing of radicalization.

It explores the strategies and criteria that the police put in place and how they perceive their role as the state’s most important instrument in establishing and maintaining particular political, social and moral orders.

This seminar is co-organized with the Danish Institute against Torture (DIGNITY).
