Background
The negotiations on the accession of Turkey into the European Union have now entered their fifth year. Back in 2005, in the aftermath of the historic EU enlargement towards Central European countries, the mood on both sides of the negotiating table was remarkably optimistic.
Today, bilateral relations are confronted with a number of difficulties, which both parties are ever less inclined to sweep under the rug. The most visible signal of this malaise is that eighteen out of thirty-five chapters of negotiations are currently frozen.
More broadly, larger questions ranging from Turkey’s size, to its geographic location, to the religious orientation of its people have become engulfed in this debate, which in turn has opened up broader and more existential questions pertaining to identity and foreign policy of both Turkey and the EU.
DIIS is pleased to be joined in a conversation on these crucial issues by Egemen Bağış, Turkey’s Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator of Turkey in accession talks with the European Union.
