Bangladesh, et af verdens fattigste og folkerigeste lande og modtager af dansk udviklingsbistand i henved 40 år, får nu en ordentlig vitaminindsprøjtning af klodens største multilaterale donor, Verdensbanken.
The World Bank will provide Bangladesh with 6,1 billion US dollar (godt 35 milliarder DKR) in credit over the next four years to support economic growth, infrastructure development and to fight the effects of climate change.
The government in Dhaka is trying to increase the South Asian countrys per capita income from 652 to more than 800 dollar over the next few years.
Presenting the country assistance strategy, World Bank Bangladesh Country Director Ellen Goldstein highlighted that the Bank will first scale up existing programs with positive results, including investments to promote independent and private-owned power plants, extend the rural electrification grid and expand successful solar energy systems.
All the money will be given by the International Development Agency (IDA), a soft loan window of the World Bank (der yder rentefrie lån med lange afdragsfrie perioder).
Actual allocations during the period will be determined annually based on total IDA resources available, the number of IDA eligible countries; and performance of all IDA borrowers as well as the terms of IDA assistance.
