E-consultation on draft guidelines for land tenure governance
Between 18 April and 16 May FAO seeks public comment

Land tenure – the rules governing how, and on what terms, people and communities gain access to land, fisheries and forests – is crucial to food security.

Today, tenure systems are under stress as population growth, environmental degradation and climate change bring new pressures to bear.

Weak governance of land tenure negatively affects social stability, undermines sustainable use of environmental resources, and dampens investment and economic growth.

In response to growing interest in tackling these challenges, FAO and a group of partners have begun developing a set of voluntary guidelines on responsible tenure governance.

The goal of the voluntary guidelines is established internationally accepted principles and standards for responsible practices that can serve as a guiding framework for both governments and civil society.

This process has involved extensive consultations with other UN agencies, governments, civil society, private sector, academia, international organizations, and the private sector.

Now an initial “zero draft” based on those inputs is available, regarding which FAO is seeking input and comment via an online “e-consultation.”

The e-consultation will be held between 18 April and 16 May; those interested can participate at www.fao.org/nr/tenure or by sending comments through email at VGTenure@ fao.org
