KATHMANDU, 24 Oct.: Nepals population has reached 27,1 million, an official of the UN Population Fund ( UNFPA) said Saturday.

– Nepals population has reached 27,1 million, and Nepal will have as many as over 51 million people by 2050, Junko Sazaki, UNFPA representative in Nepal, said while launching the state of worlds population report entitled “The Promise of Equity: Gender Equity, Reproductive Health and the Millennium Development Goals”.

The number of girl students enrolled in primary schools in Nepal has increased over the past years, she noted, adding: – The women literacy in Nepal was 26 percent in 1991 while it is 60 percent now”.

– The growing population will assume a serious dimension if not properly managed in the right way, Durga Shrestha, Nepali minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare, said while launching the report.

Human resource is an important resource of a country, Shrestha noted, adding: – At the time when the population is growing at an alarming rate, failure to manage it properly will invite serious problems”.

The report incorporates the global status of poverty, gender disparity, human rights, reproductive health and violence against women and children.
