Den amerikanske præsident Barack Obama nævnte vigtigheden af en indsats mod klimaforandringer og kom med stikpiller til den udbredte klimaskepsis blandt republikanere i den årlige “State of the Union”-tale natten til onsdag dansk tid.
“2014 was the planet’s warmest year on record. Now, one year doesn’t make a trend, but this does — 14 of the 15 warmest years on record have all fallen in the first 15 years of this century.”
Det var den amerikanske præsident Barack Obamas ord i “State of the Union Adress”, der holdes af den amerikanske præsident hvert år d. 20. januar. Traditionen kan sammenlignes med statsministerenes nytårstale.
Dette år brugte Obama noget af den vigtige taletid til at tale om klimaet og hvor vigtigt det er med en tilstrækkelig indsats mod klimaforandringer. Den amerikanske præsident hentydede ligeledes til en udbredt skepsis over for klimavidenskaben blandt republikanere.
“I’m not a scientist”
Et meget udbredt republikansk måde at reagere på spørgsmål om det sandfærdige i videnskabens konklusioner om klima er: “Well, I am not a scientist, but…”
“I’ve heard some folks try to dodge the evidence by saying they’re not scientists; that we don’t have enough information to act. Well, I’m not a scientist, either. But you know what — I know a lot of really good scientists at NASA, and NOAA, and at our major universities”, fortalte præsidenten med slet skjult henvisning til republikanerne.
“The best scientists in the world are all telling us that our activities are changing the climate, and if we do not act forcefully, we’ll continue to see rising oceans, longer, hotter heat waves, dangerous droughts and floods, and massive disruptions that can trigger greater migration, conflict, and hunger around the globe” lød det i talen.
“The Pentagon says that climate change poses immediate risks to our national security. We should act like it”, fortsatte han med henvisning til det amerikanske forsvar, der betragter klimaforandringer som en sikkerhedstrussel.
“Vi har gjort mere end nogensinde for at bekæmpe klimaforandringer”
Den amerikanske “Commander-in-Chief” lagde yderligere vægt på de resultater på klimaområdet, som han har stået i spidsen for.
“That’s why, over the past six years, we’ve done more than ever before to combat climate change, from the way we produce energy, to the way we use it. That’s why we’ve set aside more public lands and waters than any administration in history”, påpegede han.
Desuden kom han ind på problemet med den amerikanske Kongres, hvor han kan få problemer med at gennemføre klimalovgivning. Kongressen har i dag et republikansk flertal.
“And that’s why I will not let this Congress endanger the health of our children by turning back the clock on our efforts. I am determined to make sure American leadership drives international action. In Beijing, we made an historic announcement — the United States will double the pace at which we cut carbon pollution, and China committed, for the first time, to limiting their emissions”, lød løfterne i talen.
“And because the world’s two largest economies came together, other nations are now stepping up, and offering hope that, this year, the world will finally reach an agreement to protect the one planet we’ve got”, meddelte han endvidere.
Han henviser i talen til den aftale, han har indgået med Kinas ledelse om reduktioner af drivhusgasser. De to stormagter har ellers holdt hinanden i skak med hensyn til at komme med ambitiøse klimaløfter.
Han taler i den sidste sætning om den internationale klimaaftale, som ventes at blive indgået i december i Paris. Mange observatører taler om, at USAs første afroamerikanske præsident vil gøre klimaindsatsen til en politisk arv, som vil udgøre en stor del af hans eftermæle.
Det vil nok kræve en ambitiøs international aftale ved slutningen af året.
