More than a million people are affected by trachoma (egyptisk øjenbetændelse) in Ethiopia, where the preventable and treatable condition is a leading cause of blindness.
Worldwide, six million people have lost their sight to trachoma and another 15 million need treatment.
More than two million people around the world are permanently disabled by leprosy (spedalskhed). Leper colonies such as Egypt’s Abu Zaabal remain a welcome sanctuary (beskyttet sted) for sufferers of the disease.
Meanwhile, Global Funding of Innovation for Neglected Diseases (G-FINDER) said Wednesday, that a rise in global funding for research into neglected diseases (glemte sygdomme) needs to be matched by a continued focus on delivering practical new ways to curb sickness in the developing world.
